Christopher Fitzgerald

Police Officer Chris Fitzgerald was shot and killed while attempting to arrest a robbery suspect near 1700 W Montgomery Street in Philadelphia at about 7:30 pm.

The subject shot Officer Fitzgerald in the head and then attempted to steal his duty weapon, belongings, and patrol car. Officer Fitzgerald was transported to Temple University Hospital where he succumbed to his wounds.

The man who shot him was arrested at his home in Bucks County early the next morning. He was charged with the murder of a law enforcement officer, robbery, carjacking, and several other offenses.

Officer Fitzgerald had served with the Temple University Police Department for two years.

Sean L. Sluganski

Police Officer Sean Sluganski was shot and killed while responding to a domestic situation at the 1300 block of Grandview Avenue in McKeesport.

The subject's mother called 911 reporting that her son was having a PTSD episode and was being aggressive. Officer Sluganski and another officer arrived on the scene and attempted to contact the man as he walked away. The subject produced a handgun and opened fire, wounding both officers. The subject was shot in the leg by return gunfire and then fled to a nearby convenience store where he exchanged shots with a third officer before being taken into custody.

Officer Sluganski was taken to a local hospital where he succumbed to his wounds. The other officer was critically wounded and flown to a trauma center.

The subject was charged with criminal homicide, aggravated assault, assaulting a law enforcement officer, and criminal attempted murder of a law enforcement officer.

Officer Sluganski had served with the McKeesport Police Department for three years and previously served with the Charleroi Regional Police Department. He is survived by his fiancée and infant daughter.

Justin McIntire

Chief of Police Justin McIntire was shot and killed near the intersection of Brackenridge Avenue and Morgan Street during a foot pursuit of a wanted subject.

The man was wanted for a probation violation involving weapons and had fled from the Pennsylvania State Police during a traffic stop the previous night. He then fled on foot from Harrison Township the following morning during a traffic stop. At about 2:00 pm, he was located near the border of Brackenridge Borough and Tarentum Borough and led officers on a foot pursuit for over two hours. He opened fire on officers in the 900 block of Brackenridge Avenue and again in the 800 block of 3rd Avenue in which Chief McIntire was killed and a Tarentum Borough officer was wounded.

After shooting both officers, the man carjacked a vehicle and fled into the city of Pittsburgh. He fled into a wooded area following a vehicle pursuit and then opened fire on officers. He was shot and killed by return fire.

Chief McIntire had been sworn in as police chief of the Brackenridge Borough Police Department exactly four years earlier.

Chad M. Beattie

Corporal Chad Beattie suffered a fatal heart attack after a foot pursuit of a fleeing subject at 335 Washington Road in Washington at 1:48 pm.

Corporal Beattie responded to assist the South Strabane Township Police Department when they were alerted to the presence of a wanted suspect with outstanding warrants in multiple counties. After a foot pursuit through a retail store, Corporal Beattie returned to his patrol vehicle and collapsed. He was transported to the Washington Hospital where passed away.

Corporal Beattie had served with the Washington County Sheriff's Office for 20 years and was assigned to the Fugitive Unit. He is survived by his son and parents.

Stephen Charles Plum, Jr.

Police Officer Stephen Plum suffered a fatal heart attack after having responded to a mutual aid request involving a barricaded subject in the 1300 block of Nevarc Road in Warminster Township during his previous shift.

The subject had been involved in a domestic dispute and was armed with a knife. Officer Plum had responded to the mutual aid request and stood by as part of the arrest team while controlling his canine for approximately 75 minutes before the man was taken into custody.

Following the barricade, Officer Plum responded to several additional non-routine calls and conducted daily performance training with his canine partner.

Officer Plum was preparing for work on the morning of May 16th, 2022, when he suffered a fatal attack and collapsed.

Officer Plum was a U.S. Marine Corps veteran. He had served with the Warrington Township Police Department for eight years and had previously served with the Abington Township Fire Marshal's Office. He is survived by his wife and eight children.

William Lebo

Lieutenant William Lebo was shot and killed as he and other officers responded to a domestic-related burglary in the 1100 block of Forest Street at about 3:30 pm.

The owners of the house had returned home to discover that an emotionally disturbed relative had broken into the home and remained inside. The man was still inside when officers arrived on the scene. As a reaction team entered the home, the man opened fire with a handgun, striking Lieutenant Lebo and two other officers.

Despite their wounds, the officers returned fire and shot the subject, who was later found deceased inside the home.

Lieutenant Lebo was transported to a local hospital where he was pronounced dead.

Lieutenant Lebo had served with the Lebanon City Police Department for 40 years and was scheduled to retire only 30 days later, on May 1st, 2022.

Branden T. Sisca

Trooper Branden Sisca and Trooper Martin Mack were struck and killed by a suspected drunk driver near mile marker 18 on southbound I-95 in Philadelphia, shortly before 1:00 am.

They had stopped a female driver on suspicion of DUI when they were notified of a pedestrian walking along the interstate. They located the man and were assisting him into the back of one of their patrol vehicles when an approaching car drove by and attempted to pass the police vehicles by driving onto the shoulder. The vehicle fatally struck both troopers and the pedestrian they were assisting.

The driver who struck them was charged with three counts of third-degree murder, three counts of homicide by vehicle while driving under the influence, and two counts of second-degree manslaughter of a law enforcement officer. It was the same driver that had been pulled over for suspicion of DUI.

Trooper Sisca had served with the Pennsylvania State Police for 13 months and was assigned to Troop K. He is survived by his expectant wife.

Martin Francis Mack, III

He had returned to duty the following morning when he suffered a heart attack while clearing snow from his vehicle.

Chief Sheehan had served with the California Borough Police Department for 15 years. He also served as a firefighter with the Brownsville Fire Company #1. He is survived by his wife, three children, and mother.

Ross Dixon

Deputy Kuhar had served in law enforcement for 60 years, starting in 1960. Prior to joining the Cambria County Sheriff's Office in the 1980s, he had served with the Vintondale Borough Police Department, Nanty Glo Borough Police Department, and Blacklick Township Police Department. He is survived by his wife, four children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren.

Dale Provins

Police Officer Dale Provins succumbed to injuries sustained in a vehicle crash 10 days earlier in the 200 block of Old Clairton Road.

An oncoming vehicle crossed the center line and struck Officer Provins' patrol car head-on. Officer Provins was flown to a hospital in Pittsburgh where he succumbed to his injuries on June 13th, 2020.

Officer Provins was a U.S. Marines Corps veteran. He had served with the Jefferson Hills Borough Police Department for 15 years and was a third-generation police officer.

Thomas E. Booz

Park Ranger Thomas Booz died as the result of complications after contracting COVID-19 during a presumed exposure while on duty.

Park Ranger Booz served with the Bucks County Department of Parks and Recreation for 32 years. He is survived by his wife, step-daughter, and siblings.

Jose Manuel Novoa

Police Officer Jose Novoa died as the result of complications after contracting COVID-19 during a presumed exposure while on duty.

Officer Novoa had served with the Philadelphia Police Department for 27 years and was assigned to the 9th Police District. He is survived by his wife and two daughters. He was posthumously promoted to the rank of Sergeant.

Mark Joseph Romutis

Interim Police Chief Mark Romutis died as a result of complications after contracting COVID-19 while on duty.

Chief Romutis was appointed to his position with the Ambridge Borough Police Department in 2018 and has served in law enforcement for 40 years. He had previously served with the Upper St. Clair Township Police Department, Pittsburgh Police Department, and Ellwood City Police Department. He is survived by his wife and son.

Michael Lee Henry, Jr.

Police Officer Michael Henry died as the result of complications sustained in a motorcycle crash while participating in annual motor training on October 1st, 2019.

He crashed while going through one of the training courses and suffered a ruptured aorta. He underwent several surgeries but developed complications and died on January 2nd, 2020.

Officer Henry was a U.S. Army veteran and had served with the Derry Township Police Department for 25 years. He is survived by his wife, daughter, and son.

Robert Earl "Bo" McCallister

Lieutenant Bo McCallister succumbed to gunshot wounds sustained on February 19th, 1981, while responding to a bank robbery at a bank at the intersection of North Progress Avenue and Nationwide Drive.

One of the bank employees was able to activate an alarm while the subject was still inside. As Lieutenant McCallister arrived at the scene the subject was forcing two tellers to exit the bank in front of him. The man pushed the tellers aside and opened fire on Lieutenant McCallister, striking him several times.

Despite his wounds, Lieutenant McCallister was able to return fire as the subject fled into a wooded area.

Lieutenant McCallister partially recovered and remained active with the police department. He underwent numerous surgeries as a result of his wounds and passed away from complications on January 20th, 2019. His death was a ruled a homicide by the medical examiner.

The subject who shot him was never apprehended and remains at large.

Lieutenant McCallister had served with the Susquehanna Township Police Department for 32 years.

Alex Isai Sable

Police Officer Alex Sable died after suffering a heart attack during a SWAT training exercise at Community College of Baltimore County-Dundalk Campus in Dundalk, Maryland, on May 6th, 2018.

He was participating in a SWAT school hosted by the Baltimore County Police Department. The participants were conducting a water rescue training exercise in a campus pool. As Officer Sable exited the pool at the end of the exercise, he suffered cardiac arrest. On-site medics and firefighters immediately performed CPR. He was transported to a hospital in Baltimore, Maryland, where he remained until passing away on May 9th, 2018.

Officer Sable served with the York City Police Department for four years and was a U.S Marine Corps veteran. He was a member of the York County Quick Response Team and is survived by his wife and three children.

Brian S. Cuscino

Detective Sergeant Brian Cuscino suffered a fatal heart attack while participating in the department's mandatory physical fitness program at approximately 7:30 am.

He collapsed while using a treadmill at a local gym that was authorized to be used for the wellness program. Another officer found him unconscious.

Sergeant Cuscino had served with the New Castle Police Department for 17 years and was assigned to the Criminal Investigations Division and Special Response Team. He is survived by his wife and two sons.

He passed away on the same day he was to receive the department's Officer of the Quarter award.

Raymond Diaz, Jr.

Police Officer Raymond Diaz died as a result of complications due to injuries sustained in an accident when his patrol car was struck by a vehicle while responding to a burglary.

As a result of the accident, Officer Diaz was diagnosed with concussion-like symptoms as well as other injuries. As part of his treatment, Officer Diaz was given a cane to use because of his concussion. While at home recovering, Officer Diaz suffered a recurrent injury during a fall. Surgery was performed to correct the injury. Officer Diaz died as a result of an accidental prescription drug overdose.

Police Officer Raymond Diaz was assigned to the 24th Police District and served with the Philadelphia Police Department for 20 years.

He was survived by his wife and three children.

In October 2019, 2100 Castor Avenue was renamed Police Officer Raymond Diaz, Jr. Memorial Highway.

John James Wilding

Patrolman John Wilding succumbed to injuries sustained the previous night at approximately 3:20 am while pursuing three juveniles who had stolen a vehicle.

The juveniles bailed out of the vehicle in the area of the 300 block of North Main Avenue with several officers, including Patrolman Wilding, chasing them on foot. Patrolman Wilding jumped over a small wall behind a restaurant at 301 North Main Avenue, not realizing that there was a 15-foot drop on the other side. He suffered a serious head injury as the result of the fall.

He was transported to Geisinger Community Medical Center, where he remained until succumbing to his injuries early the next morning.

All three juveniles were arrested and charged as adults with robbery, terroristic threats, and recklessly endangering another person. Additional charges were filed against all three defendants in 2017 while they were still in custody.

Patrolman Wilding had served with the Scranton Police Department for one year. He is survived by his wife and two children.

Walter John DeWitt, III

Police Officer Walter DeWitt died from complications of surgery to correct a shoulder injury he suffered in a training accident on October 27th, 2014.

He had initially injured his shoulder in an on-duty vehicle crash on November 19th, 1984. The shoulder was re-injured in 2014 during a tactical training exercise. A recruit had stepped on his foot, causing him to fall backwards onto the floor. His shoulder injury was aggravated and required follow-up surgery. He died from complications of the surgery.

Officer DeWitt had served with the Philadelphia Police Department for 33 years.

David Kedra

Trooper David Kedra was accidentally shot and killed while participating in a training exercise at the Montgomery County Public Safety Training Complex, in Plymouth Township, at approximately 4:45 pm.

During the exercise, a live round was discharged and struck Trooper Kedra in the chest. He was flown to Temple University Hospital where he succumbed to the injury.

Trooper Kedra had served with the Pennsylvania State Police for just over two years.

Anthony Joseph Gorman

Sergeant Anthony Gorman died as a result of complications due to a gunshot wound sustained 17 years earlier while investigating a suspicious vehicle in a church parking lot on Keely Road shortly after midnight.

Unbeknownst to Sergeant Gorman, the subject was responsible for several armed robberies in the area and had committed one shortly before the shooting. As Sergeant Gorman approached the vehicle, he was shot by the subject just below his vest, striking him in his abdomen. Sergeant Gorman was able to return fire at the subject but did not strike him. The subject fled the scene of the shooting in a wooded area to his home where he was arrested by authorities several hours later.

Sergeant Gorman was rushed to a hospital in the city of Franklin where he was initially treated and then life-flighted to a hospital in Pittsburgh.

As a result of the gunshot wound, Sergeant Gorman went through several hospitalizations before he was able to return to work for a short time. He medically retired in August 2000. He had multiple recurrent bleeding episodes that required multiple blood transfusions. As his health continued to deteriorate, Sergeant Gorman died shortly after hospitalization as a result of complications.

The subject was sentenced to 17 to 50 years in prison for attempted murder and armed robbery. While in prison, the sentence was increased after the subject attacked two corrections officers at the Venango County Jail and for retaliating against a witness as the result of writing a letter to Sergeant Gorman while serving his original sentence. The subject was found dead in his cell on March 10th, 2015, at the State Correctional Institute in Albion, Pennsylvania.

Sergeant Gorman was a retired U.S Army Military police officer and a veteran of the Vietnam War. He served with the Sugarcreek Borough Police Department for 20 years. He is survived by his wife and four children.

Edward A. Wehe, III

Patrolman Edward Wehe suffered a fatal heart attack shortly after clearing the scene of a protest at the Delaware County Prison.

He had been dispatched to the prison to assist in removing the protesters, who had not obtained the proper permits to assemble. He was able to clear the scene after approximately four hours. He went to a local restaurant where he ran into his daughter and, while speaking with her, suddenly collapsed. His daughter immediately initiated CPR until medics arrived. He was transported to Riddle Memorial Hospital where he passed away.

Patrolman Wehe was a U.S. Navy veteran. He had served with the Delaware County Courthouse and Park Police Department for 18 years, and also served as a part-time officer with the Marcus Hook Police Department. He is survived by his daughter, granddaughter, fiancee, and brother.

Brian J. Lorenzo

Police Officer Brian Lorenzo was killed when his department motorcycle was struck head-on by a drunk driver on I-95, near the Cottman Avenue exit at approximately 3:15 a.m.

The drunk driver was driving the wrong way on the interstate at the time. The driver was arrested at the scene and later charged with third-degree murder.

Officer Lorenzo had served with the Philadelphia Police Department for 23 years and was assigned to the Highway Patrol. He is survived by his wife and three children. He is also survived by a brother who serves with the Philadelphia Police Department.

Avery E. Freeman

Patrolman Avery Freeman succumbed to complications of a surgery required after injuring his knee while on duty.

On March 31, 2012, he and another officer had arrested a female subject at the scene of a domestic disturbance. As Patrolman Freeman walked back to his patrol car he slipped on wet, moss-covered bricks and fell, injuring both knees. The injuries were severe enough that surgery was required. As he recovered from the surgery at the Taylor Rehabilitation Center he suffered a fatal pulmonary embolism.

Patrolman Freeman had served in law enforcement for 17 years. He is survived by his four children, mother, and siblings.

Blake T. Coble

Trooper Blake Coble was killed when his patrol car collided with a tractor trailer at the intersection of SR 168 and Blackhawk Road in South Beaver Township, Beaver County, at approximately 10:00 am.

His patrol car was struck after the semi ran a stop sign at a high rate of speed.

He was transported to Heritage Valley Beaver Hospital where he succumbed to his injuries.

Trooper Coble, who was preparing for retirement, had served with the Pennsylvania State Police for 24 years and was assigned to Troop D, Beaver Station. He is survived by his wife and two children. His wife serves as a dispatcher for the agency.

Bradley Michael Fox

Police Officer Brad Fox was shot and killed while involved in a foot pursuit along the Schuylkill River Trail, near the intersection of Conshohocken and Ernest Station Roads.

He and other officers had been investigating an accident when the driver of a vehicle drove around traffic stopped at the scene, prompting the officers to pursue the vehicle. The vehicle, which was later determined to be stolen, struck another car before the driver fled on foot along the trail.

Officer Fox radioed for backup and began searching for the suspect with his canine, Nick. As they walked up a hill adjacent to railroad tracks, the suspect emerged from an ambush position and opened fire, killing Officer Fox and wounding K9 Nick. The subject then fatally shot himself in the chest twice. An investigation determined that the subject was on felony probation at the time, and was also the prime suspect in the disappearance of his fiancee in 1999.

Officer Fox was a U.S. Marine Corps combat veteran and had served with the Plymouth Township Police Department for seven years. He is survived by his expectant wife and young daughter. Officer Fox was killed the day before his 35th birthday.

In September 2014, Route 263 was renamed Bradley M. Fox Memorial Highway, on his 37th birthday.

Moses Walker, Jr.

Police Officer Moses Walker was shot and killed while attempting to take police action while off duty shortly before 6:00 am.

He had just finished his shift at the 22nd district station and was walking to a bus stop after changing into civilian clothes. He was at the intersection of North 20th Street and Cecil B. Moore Avenue when two men started following him in a suspicious manner. He attempted to take evasive action to avoid an encounter but the men caught him and announced a robbery.

As he drew his weapon to take action against the men he was shot in the chest, stomach, and arm. The entire incident was captured on several surveillance systems.

Both subjects were arrested within several days. On July 2, 2015, the shooter was sentenced to life.

Officer Walker had served with the Philadelphia Police Department for 19 years. He is survived by his five siblings.
